BURTON -- It's the latest example of school districts trying to save money through consolidation.  A long-time Burton elementary school may close its doors.

Monday night, Atherton Community School leaders discussed the possibility of closing Vern Van Y Elementary School because of declining enrollment and depleted savings over the past seven years.

The discussions have been ongoing since November 2012.  Vern Van Y Elementary is the district’s oldest building with the least amount of student capacity.

A volunteer committee of parents, teachers and administrators have been researching the consolidation option since December and told board members Monday that closing the elementary school and housing students in the district’s other two buildings is a necessary move.

Parents at the meeting largely supported the idea.

If the school is closed, one building would house kindergarten through 6th grade, the other, 7th through 12th grade.

The board will be able to vote on the consolidation plan at its meeting on Feb. 25.
