FRENCHTOWN TOWNSHIP -- DTE Energy is seeking to expand the Fermi nuclear plant, though the plan could be derailed by an endangered snake.

The Atomic Safety and Licensing Board of the Nuclear Regulatory Commission says the hearing focus on the eastern fox snake and if it would be at risk during the construction of the plant expansion.

Environmental and anti-nuclear groups are concerned because, they say, the environmental impact statement for the new plant has no specifics on how the snake will be protected.

A spokesman for DTE, Guy Cerullo, says Michigan environmental regulators have already approved the company's plans for protecting the snake.
