FRANKENMUTH -- Republican Presidential Candidate Mitt Romney's campaign stop in Frankenmuth on Tuesday drew criticism from local democratic leaders.

Dan Kildee is the former Genesee County Treasurer and current candidate for Michigan's 5th District seat in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Kildee believes Romney's disapproval of a government-backed bankruptcy for General Motors and Chrysler will hurt his chances with Mid-Michigan voters.

"If Mitt had had his way those folks would have been on their own, GM would not exist today. The retirees of that company would be left to their savings and whatever their social security was," Kildee said during an interview at the NBC25 studios Tuesday afternoon.

Kildee was in Frankenmuth during Romney's campaign stop, before making campaign stops of his own in Saginaw and Bay City.

Kildee will face the winner of a Republican primary between Jim Slezak and Tom Wassa in November's election.

Kildee's uncle Dale Kildee will retire this year after 35 years in office.
