Learn how to be Genesee County's next leaders
FLINT, MI — In an effort to address what many have called a “leadership shortage” in the Greater Flint area, more than 250 people plan to spend an entire day learning how to build, strengthen, diversify and revitalize their volunteer Boards of Directors. The Nonprofit Governance Summit: Building a Better Genesee Countyis from 9 a.m.- 4 p.m., May 29, 2008 at the Holiday Inn at Gateway Centre.
The Summit will feature national experts from the Washington, D.C.-based BoardSource and state experts from the Ann Arbor-based BoardConnect program of NEW. Also, local speakers include: Congressman Dale Kildee; Ruth Mott Foundation Executive Director Steve Wilson; Charles Stewart Mott Program Officer Kimberly Roberson; BEST Project Director Jennifer Acree, and United Way of Genesee County Executive Director Ron Butler. A local funders’ panel will be moderated by Foundation Liaison to the Office of the Governor Karen-Aldridge Eason.

BoardSource (www.boardsource.org) is dedicated to increasing the effectiveness of nonprofit organizations by strengthening boards of directors. NEW
NEW (www.new.org) has nearly 15 years of experience in helping nonprofits succeed. BoardConnect® is a program developed by NEW (with offices in Ann Arbor and Detroit) and is operated by NEW in Washtenaw County, and by NEW in collaboration with the Detroit Regional Chamber and the Michigan Nonprofit Association in the metropolitan Detroit area. The program operates in other parts of Michigan in collaboration with local nonprofit service providers in Traverse City and Marquette and in the Greater Triangle area in North Carolina.
BEST Project
The BEST Project (www.bestprojectonline.org) designs, facilitates and manages organizational assessment and capacity building services for Genesee County nonprofit agencies. Programming aims to increase the effectiveness and sustainability of participating agencies in alignment with community needs. The capacity building services include, but are not limited to: creation of a vetted consulting pool; targeted consulting including enhanced board development activities through the BoardSource initiative; peer learning, convening, and professional development activities; and just-in-time technical assistance. The Flint Funders Collaborative (FFC) serves as the project’s Advisory Board.
