(AP) -- LANSING, Mich. - A road builders' group wants Michigan drivers to pay $12 more a month in gas taxes and vehicle registration fees to improve the transportation system. Motorists now spend $30 per month on roads and other infrastructure. The Michigan Infrastructure and Transportation Association unveiled a plan Wednesday with hopes of the Legislature passing it during the lame-duck session in December.

One proposal would eliminate the 19-cents-a-gallon gasoline tax and instead tax the wholesale price of gas. Another proposal would raise vehicle registration fees by 50 percent. Legislators have said they are unsure whether much will get done before next year. A state task force released a report last week saying transportation spending must be doubled.
