HURON TOWNSHIP, MI. (AP) -- A Harbor Beach hunter died after falling 25 feet from a malfunctioning tree stand in Michigan's Thumb. Huron County Sheriff Kent Tibbits says in a news release a bolt in the stand may have broken or come loose, causing the stand to separate from the tree and sending Scott David Booms to the ground. The Huron Daily Tribune of Bad Axe and WSGW-AM say the 33-year-old was pronounced dead at Harbor Beach Community Hospital after the Sunday afternoon accident. Booms' two minor sons and brother-in-law were near the tree when he fell.

Tibbits warns that hunters should regularly inspect their equipment and use a harness or safety straps when hunting above ground.
