MIDLAND, MI. (AP) -- A sweepstakes contest proved costly to a Midland man who ended up being scammed out of more than $110,000. Police Detective Lt. Gerald Ladwig says someone claiming to represent a sweepstakes company called the man and said he could receive his winnings by sending a check.
Ladwig tells The Saginaw News that the victim agreed, but the scammer phoned again between Nov. 21 and Dec. 2 to seek more money for taxes and other pretexts before sending the winnings.
The detective says the man eventually decided "enough was enough and realized something was wrong." The man, who is in his 60s, is now under the care of his family.
