A tough economy and low student population is pushing the Flint Board of Education to make a difficult decision.
Ira Rutherford, who is heading the committee charged with deciding what to do with the buildings, voiced his opinion to the board at a Saturday morning meeting. Rutherford said that the district should close down multiple buildings, consolidating the student body from the current 35 locations down to 18. In addition, Rutherford recommended building a new elementary and high school and renovating the schools that would remain open. The expected cost would be around $140 to $150 million. That expense would have to be approved by voters.
Full details of the committee’s report will be made public on December 17.
