HOLLAND, MI. (AP) -- Office furniture maker Haworth Inc. says it will trim 350 production jobs by closing a seating factory in Allegan and offering voluntary layoffs with enhanced severance packages to workers in Holland and Douglas.
The Holland-based company said in a written statement Tuesday the Allegan plant will close by mid 2009. Its production will be shifted to other North American locations.
Haworth says the plant closing and job cuts are necessary to help it remain competitive in the face of the economic downturn. The company also will temporarily implement four day work weeks beginning Jan. 16. The measure will be evaluated week to week.
