DETROIT, MI. (AP) -- Wayne County authorities will review more than five years of files to search for cases where gun evidence may have been misjudged by the Detroit police lab.
Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy announced details Friday, more than two months after the Detroit lab was shut down because of errors and incompetence. In some cases, Michigan State Police will test evidence if the defendant was convicted at trial and sent to prison.
The period is 2003 through much of September 2008.
Worthy says she wants the public to have confidence in the justice system. The head of Michigan's appellate defender office says the prosecutor's willingness to take another look at evidence is unprecedented. Worthy spokeswoman Maria Miller says the number of cases is not known.
