MEXICO CITY (AP) -- General Motors of Mexico says it will temporarily idle three factories because of the worst auto sales slump in a quarter of a century.

The company says its plant in the central state of Guanajuato will shut down from Dec. 22 to Jan. 7, and its plants in the northern states of San Luis Potosi and Coahuila from Dec. 22 to Jan. 2.

Monday's statement said employees will be laid off temporarily. It didn't say how much production would be cut.

On Friday, parent company General Motors Corp. said it will temporarily close 20 factories across North America and make production cuts.

Nearly all automakers who sell in the U.S. are mired in the worst sales slump in 26 years. GM reported a 41 percent drop in sales in November.
