DETROIT, MI. (AP) -- Detroit's school district is getting a chance to oppose the appointment of an emergency financial manager to handle the district's budget problems.
State Superintendent of Public Instruction Mike Flanagan wrote a letter Tuesday setting a public hearing on Thursday morning at state offices in Detroit. Flanagan last week declared that Detroit Public Schools is in a financial emergency, meaning he will appoint a financial manager.
The district requested a hearing to contest his decision. Flanagan said the district violated a consent agreement by failing to submit a revised deficit elimination plan.
