WESTLAND, MI. (AP) -- A mother will stand trial on charges that she put her newborn in a trash bag and left him in a garage.
The Detroit Free Press reports Friday that 28-year-old Valeeka Gartrell's trial has been set for March 4 in Wayne County Circuit Court.
The Westland woman is charged with assault with intent to murder and first-degree child abuse. Her lawyers had argued that Gartrell did not understand her actions after delivering the child and putting him in her parent's suburban Detroit garage in April 2007.
Gartrell's mother and stepfather were not aware of the birth.
Police say her stepfather found the boy after hearing his cries from the garage.
