GENESEE COUNTY -- The Genesee County Health Department reports that sewage was discharged into many bodies of water in the Genesee County area due to the weekend's weather and power outages.

The Flint Journal stated, "More than 1 million gallos of diluted county sewage spilled" throughout the course of the weekend. The Flint Journal reported that 550,000 gallons of sewage spilled in onto Fenton and Bristol roads in Flint.

The Genesee County Health Department states this type of discharge survives in the water for up to 72 hours after it is discharged from the natural source.  Officials say the bacteria will naturally die over the course of the next few days.

Genesee County Health Department warns residents to avoid contact with the water.  If contact is made, please wash the contaminated area thoroughly with warm water and soap.
