MIDLAND, MI (AP) -- Federal regulators are billing Dow Chemical Co. for the time they're spending on developing a plan to clean up dioxin pollution from the company's Midland plant.
The Bay City Times reported Tuesday that the Environmental Protection Agency has billed Dow for more than $1.8 million in staff time.
The case involves contamination of the Tittabawassee and Saginaw rivers and Saginaw Bay over many decades.
The newspaper says it obtained a 72-page document from last November that details the charges. Among them are payroll costs, travel expenses and contractor payments.
EPA spokesman Mick Hans says Dow agreed to be billed for agency staff time as part of the Superfund process, a federal program for dealing with highly contaminated sites.
