FLINT, MI -- The following is a message from the Foodbank of Eastern Michigan:
The Merkley-Elderly Charitable Trust presented a check in the amount of $10,000 to William Kerr, President of the Food Bank of Eastern Michigan to sponsor 50 Genesee County senior citizens in the Senior Box Program. The Merkley Trust invests in organizations providing services to Genesee County’s youth and elderly including the provision, through the Food Bank, of over 121,500 pounds of food to low-income Genesee County seniors over the past ten years. Senior citizens in the Senior Box program receive a supplemental food box each month for one year.
Established in 1981, the Food Bank of Eastern Michigan has grown into a major affiliate of Feeding America, the nation’s Food Bank network. The Food Bank is a recognized and respected community servant and the most decorated Food Bank in the nation earning eight National Model Program Awards, an Excellence in Food Banking Award, and is the 2002 Food Bank of the Year. The Food Bank has earned Charity Navigator’s highest praise-- a Four-Star Rating-- for six consecutive years. Through the generous community support and donors like the Merkley Charitable Trust, the Food Bank of Eastern Michigan distributed over 18 million pounds of food in 2008.
