TRAVERSE CITY -- With the snow and cold you'd think more people than ever would be snowmobiling, but that's not the case in Northern Michigan. The executive director of the Michigan Snowmobile Association tells the Traverse City Record-Eagle the number of snowmobilers is down by about one-third this winter.
And, the economy is being blamed. Snowmobiling and related tourism generally pump about $1 billion into Michigan's economy every year. Snowmobile rental shops and motels are among businesses that have noticed the slowdown.
