SAGINAW (AP) -- A Saginaw man has been charged with shooting his 11-year-old nephew in the chest after mistaking him for an intruder. Forty-seven-year-old Mark Mason was arraigned Thursday on seven felonies, including assault with intent to do great bodily harm less than a murder, which carries a maximum penalty of 10 years.
Police say Mason told officers he mistook his nephew for an intruder when he shot the boy in the upper chest Tuesday. The Saginaw News reports the fifth-grader is in serious condition.
A pre-conference hearing is scheduled for Feb. 5 and a preliminary hearing will be held Feb. 12 before Saginaw County District Judge Kyle Higgs Tarrant. Defense attorney James Piazza declined to comment on the case Friday.
