LANSING (AP) -- The amount of Canadian trash coming into Michigan has declined for a second straight year.  A Michigan Department of Environmental Quality report posted Friday says Canada sent about 2 percent less trash to state landfills in the fiscal year that ended Sept. 30. Canadian trash coming into Michigan has dropped more than 11 percent since peaking in the 2006 fiscal year.

Canada still dumps more trash in Michigan landfills than all importing states combined. A 2006 deal calls for Canadian municipal trash sent to Michigan  to be phased out by 2010. But the agreement doesn't cover industrial and commercial garbage.

Total waste disposal in Michigan landfills declined by about 2 percent last fiscal year. Overall imports from other states increased slightly.
