DETROIT (AP) -- A judge has heard arguments over whether to release more than 1,000 text messages written or received by former Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick and his former lover and ex-top aide, Christine Beatty.
Wayne County Circuit Judge Timothy Kenny said Monday he will rule on the issue March 6. The Detroit Free Press has requested that the messages be released. The newspaper argues they may reveal possible wrongdoing in the Kilpatrick administration.
Lawyers for Kilpatrick and Beatty say the messages are protected under attorney-client privilege and a privilege protecting internal decisions of city government. The messages are part of a court case against Beatty, who along with Kilpatrick has been jailed after pleading guilty to obstruction of justice.
