PUTNAM TWP. (AP) -- About $400 in pennies raised by students for charity has been stolen from a Michigan school. Officials tell the Livingston County Daily Press & Argus of Howell that a jug containing the pennies was taken sometime during the past week, probably by someone with access to the building.

The pennies were to go to a program run by a nonprofit that builds schools in Afghanistan and Pakistan. Light of the World Academy students from preschool through fourth grade either collected their pennies or earned them by doing small jobs, including sewing socks and other clothing.

In June, the school's parent-teacher organization will match the total amount raised by students. The Putnam Township school has filed a report with the Livingston County sheriff's department.
