LANSING -- Just getting by got a whole lot harder for a whole lot of people this week. Job cuts in the last seven days alone topped 140,000. The unfortunate stories of those impacted by the economic crisis are now all too familiar to many governors across the U.S.
Governor Jennifer Granholm is closely watching Washington's debate about how best to help. She said the top priority of economic stimulus is creating jobs. "Believe me, we are all about jobs. Those 140,000 jobs that were lost this past week, we see the impact of this every day and I'm speaking not just for Michigan, but for governors across the country. We need help. We need it now and it's not about budgets, it's about creating jobs in our states," Gov. Granholm stated.
This past week, the House passed an $819 billion stimulus plan supported by President Obama without a single Republican vote. The proposal comes before the Senate this week for debate and GOP lawmakers are already voicing strong opposition to it.
