LANSING (AP) -- Michigan officials have rejected a proposal to sell state land near Grayling for a theme park because the developer failed to show he could finance the project. Department of Natural Resources Director Rebecca Humphries announced her ruling Thursday in Lansing.
Rochester-based Axiom Entertainment proposed a 1,400-acre park called Main Street America. Developer Patrick Crosson said it would include roller coasters, water parks and other attractions.
Supporters said it would give the struggling northern Michigan community an economic boost, while critics questioned whether it could succeed.
Crosson told the Detroit Free Press he expected Humphries' decision but was disappointed.
Grayling Township Supervisor Terry Wright told the Traverse City Record-Eagle Crosson could keep seeking financing for the project and try again later.
