WENTZVILLE, MO (AP) -- General Motors Corp. workers who normally manufacture Chevrolet Express and GMC Savana vans face a three-week shutdown of their Wentzville plant, due to sluggish sales and the poor economy.
But United Autoworkers Local 2250, the GM plant and the United Way of Greater St. Louis organized an onsite volunteer fair on Thursday to encourage about 2,000 employees to consider volunteering during their time away from work.
Auto workers agreed to volunteer at agencies that help people avoid foreclosure, care for children in need and work with hospice patients.
Benefits representative Mike Bridgins came up with the idea when he heard President Barack Obama speak of the importance of Americans helping one another in difficult times.
