GRAND RAPIDS (AP) -- A 29-year-old suspect in a Michigan child sex assault case who was arrested last year by U.S. marshals in Las Vegas has been sentenced to between six and 22 years in prison.
Derick Freeland told a Kent County judge in Grand Rapids before sentencing Wednesday that he hoped he would get a life term so he would not have to fear hurting another child. Freeland says he hates himself.
Freeland pleaded guilty last month to second-degree criminal sexual conduct as a repeat offender.
Freeland was arrested in October at a condominium where he had been staying with a friend. He had been sought since September by police in Grand Rapids on a sex assault charge involving a minor under 13 years of age.
The case stemmed from a 2007 assault.
