Delta College Placed on Presidential Honor Roll for Community Service

Delta College received a place on the President’s Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll for exemplary service efforts to America’s communities. Presented by the Corporation for National and Community Service, this award is the highest federal recognition a school can achieve for its community efforts and service-learning. Delta College was one of six schools honored by the Corporation with the Presidential Award.

Selection was based on factors including innovation with service projects, percentage of student participation, courses offered with academic service-learning, and incentives for service involvement. Delta had 3,145 students involved in academic service-learning, and 464,476 student service hours in 2008.

“Non-profit organizations get the volunteers they need, and students utilize the knowledge they’re learning in class in a real-world application. I am proud of our students and faculty for serving the Great Lakes Bay Region and earning this recognition,” said Dr. Jean Goodnow, Delta College President.

“Real-world application” was applied during semester break last year. The Delta College Foundation Distribution Committee approved a proposal to develop an Alternative Spring Break Program for Delta College students. Thirteen staff and students partnered with United Way of America to help rebuild communities devastated by Hurricanes Ivan, Katrina and Rita. Joined by 62 other college and high school students, they helped clean-up and re-store the Lake Charles, Louisiana area, collecting 655 service hours.

“We salute Delta College for making community service a campus priority, and thank the millions of college students who are helping to renew America through service to others,” said Stephen Goldsmith, Vice Chair of the Board of Directors of the Corporation.
