U.S. Senator Debbie Stabenow (D-MI) today made the following statement regarding President Obama’s executive order lifting existing restrictions on stem cell research.“Today, help has come with a stroke of a pen for millions of Americans and their families who are fighting debilitating disease every day.
By lifting a major hurdle for medical research, we will see new opportunities for treatment and for cures. President Obama’s act ensures that stem cell research will be done under strict ethical guidelines.
“I was proud to help lead the fight to advance this life-saving research in Congress just as many Michigan voters turned out last November to successfully pass a ballot initiative to overturn a similar state restriction. I look forward to continue working with this administration to advance responsible research and bring quality, affordable health care to all Americans.” – U.S. Senator Debbie Stabenow
Sen. Carl Levin, D-Mich., made the following statement after President Obama signed an executive order today overturning President Bush’s ban on stem cell research:
“I’m pleased that President Obama’s decision to lift the restrictive Bush-era limits on this life-giving research will allow the top doctors and scientists in the world, including those in Michigan, to help improve lives by studying embryonic stem cells derived from embryos that would otherwise be destroyed and discarded. In order to achieve the enormous potential of embryonic stem cells’ role in curing debilitating diseases, we must invest federal dollars into this necessary and important research.”
