CADILLAC (AP) -- A Cadillac man will return home to battle leukemia after the military says it won't pay his medical bills because he had cancer before he enlisted in the Air Force.
The Grand Rapids Press reports 21-year-old Airman Joseph Weston expects to be released on Wednesday from Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio.
Weston began basic training May 31 and was diagnosed with leukemia June 10 after collapsing on his way to a church service.
The Air Force says Weston will be discharged without disability compensation because the cancer was a pre-existing condition, and he showed early signs such as shortness of breath.
Parents JoAnn and Jim Weston say they don't have the money to pay for 18 months of scheduled chemotherapy but hope Medicaid will pick up the bill.
