FLINT -- the following is a message from the office of Sen. Gleason:
Senator John Gleason (D-Flushing) today announced that the City of Flint has been awarded $525,000 from the Michigan Natural Resources Trust Fund for property acquisition for the Grand Traverse Greenway project. The funds will be matched with $175,000 in local funds.
"This development project will result in a great asset to the Flint community as well as enhanced quality of life for our residents," said Gleason. "Expanding this trail will provide recreational opportunities to our citizens and also create more connections between our neighborhoods and downtown Flint, making the city more easily accessible and walkable."
The Grand Traverse Greenway project focuses on the acquisition of an abandoned rail corridor for the development of a 3-mile regional trail that will connect to Riverbank Park in downtown Flint and the 12.5-mile Flint River Trail.
The Grand Traverse Greenway trail was one of the Top Priority Trail Projects for Genesee County in the 2007 Genesee County Regional Trail Plan. This nonmotorized trail will create a complete north-south trail connection through the entire City of Flint, and connect many local parks and natural areas, such as Thread Creek, Swartz Creek, Windiate Park, Happy Hollow Nature Area, Spring Grove Natural Area, Aldrich Park and Riverbank Park. It will also connect all the neighborhoods on the south side of Flint to Downtown, and will provide economic, health, cultural and environmental benefits for the City of Flint and Genesee County.
