FLINT -- United Auto Workers Local 598 says that the General Motors truck assembly plant in Flint will remain open. The news comes after negotiations to reduce costs at the plant.
GM wanted to trim the current compliment of 350 skilled trade workers to around 150, by allowing outside contractors to take up some of the work, as well as working weekends for straight time.
General Motors wants outside companies to be able to bring in the materials used in the plant. The company also wants a 4/10 work schedule, which would result in a schedule of four, ten-hour workdays. This is what the company wanted, not necessarily what was settled upon.
Denise Johnson, the Flint Assembly plant manager, said in a statement that “GM and UAW Local 598 are pleased to confirm that we have reached a tentative local agreement that will improve GM's competitiveness and contribute to our overall viability plan as we work through the significant challenges facing the industry and the U.S. economy. We appreciate our union partners' willingness to work with us as we restructure our business for long-term success.”
In a news release, Johnson recognized her staff and Local 598 leadership for their teamwork and dedication to position the plant for success. “Without question, the challenging economic conditions we now face are having a dramatic impact on the entire automotive industry. The teamwork shown throughout the local negotiations process is an example of how GM will continue to restructure, increase efficiency, and shape our business for the future.”
Union members will find out more details of the deal in an informational meeting on Sunday at the Whiting Auditorium in Flint.
