MOUNT CLEMENS (AP) -- A former Detroit-area schoolteacher who was convicted of having sex with a student has been fined $500 for violating her probation by attending the state wrestling finals at The Palace of Auburn Hills.

The Macomb Daily reports 43-year-old Janelle Batkins was fined Tuesday for violating the terms of her probation by attending an event primarily designed for youths.

Batkins pleaded no contest last year to two counts of second-degree criminal sexual conduct. A no-contest plea isn't an admission of guilt but is treated as one at sentencing.

The Harrison Township woman was accused of having consensual sex with a then-17-year-old male student.

Defense attorney David Griem says he told Batkins it was OK to attend last week's competition to watch her son compete.
