FLINT -- The following is a message from Mott Community College:

Students attending or planning to attend Mott Community College will be pleased to learn that the Mott Community College Board of Trustees voted unanimously at its March meeting to hold the rate of tuition and fees at current levels for the Fall 2009 semester.

That means a zero percent increase in tuition and fees for Fall 2009.

"This was not an easy decision," stated MCC President M. Richard Shaink. "Obviously, the college is facing rising costs on many fronts, from insurance to utilities, but we also are aware of the critical needs in our community. We are trying to work together with state government to keep the cost of college as affordable as possible. Fortunately, Mott Community College is the most cost-effective college option in the area."

The decision to freeze tuition was based on three assumptions: 1) the State of Michigan honors its commitment to not decrease MCC's current funding levels, 2) the State also honors its promise to share its portion of the Federal Economic Stimulus Package with the college, and 3) Genesee County property tax revenues do not decline further than MCC's current forecasted amount of a 3.5 percent decline.

"If those conditions are not met or other economic factors change radically, we may have to revisit this decision later in the year, but the Fall 2009 semester will not see an increase in tuition," stated MCC spokesman Michael Kelly.

The current in-district rate at MCC is $84.70 per contact hour, meaning that yearly tuition and fees for a full time student can amount to less that $2,600, depending on their program of study. MCC continues to be the least expensive higher education option in the area, providing more than 100 different programs for students coming right out of high school, individuals coming back to learn a new skill or complete a degree, as well as those seeking to enhance their careers.
