(AP) -- Michigan's public elementary and middle school students have improved their math scores on standardized tests for the fourth straight year. But results in other subject areas are mixed.

The state released the latest Michigan Educational Assessment Program test scores Thursday. The scores cover tests given in grades three through nine in the fall of 2008.

More than 75 percent of the students tested in grades three through eight scored proficient or above in math. The greatest improvement came among seventh graders.

Writing scores improved at most grade levels. Reading, science and social studies results generally were mixed or held steady.

MEAP scores are a major factor in determining whether Michigan schools meet federal No Child Left Behind standards.
