MACKINAW CITY -- The Mackinaw City police say a fifth-grade student from the Saginaw School District who was on a field trip has died in an apparent drowning at a hotel pool.

The 10 year old Jaylyn Ferguson drowned in the pool at the Holiday Inn Express on N. Louvingney St. Tuesday around 7:00 pm. Police say the child was pronounced dead at Straits Area Hospital in St. Ignace.

The boy was with a group of 37 students visiting Mackinaw City and Mackinac Island. There were 12 chaperones and 2 teachers in the pool area at the time of the drowning.  One student had located Ferguson at the bottom of the pool in approximately 5 ft. of water, and another student was able to bring him to the surface for adults to begin CPR.

Grief counseling was to be provided at Zilwaukee International Studies School, where the student attended.
