FREELAND -- The following is a message from Sen. Kahn:
The Michigan Senate Thursday approved $12.7 million in American Recovery and Reinvestment Act funds for the construction of a new terminal at MBS International Airport in Freeland, said Sen. Roger Kahn.
"This is fantastic news for the entire Great Lakes Bay Region,"
said Kahn, R-Saginaw Township. "The MBS project will benefit area job providers and put our people to work. Construction of this terminal translates to 250 jobs for our workers and a growing local economy.
I’ve been pushing for this funding and I’m happy to see it become a reality."
The funds will be used to construct a new commercial service terminal building, including the foundation, superstructure, building systems, passenger boarding bridges, public-use furnishings, and site improvements, including drainage, utilities, and an access road.
The supplemental budget approved by both the Senate and House of Representatives, provides $30.4 million to support equipment purchases and capital improvement projects at five Michigan airports.
The other four airports selected are:
- Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport, $15 million;
- Gogebic-Iron County Airport, $200,000
- Muskegon County Airport, $800,000;
- Sawyer International Airport, $1.7 million
Project selection decisions were made by the Federal Aviation Administration.
According to MBS International Airport, release of the FAA grant to complete its terminal will immediately result in jobs and infrastructure to support the Great Lakes Bay Region’s economic resurgence.
