(AP) -- General Motors CEO Fritz Henderson says he expects to remain as the automaker's chief executive when it emerges from bankruptcy protection.

Henderson met with the Obama administration's auto task force on Thursday before meeting on Capitol Hill with Michigan lawmakers.

Henderson told reporters it's his "expectation" that he will remain chief executive of GM when the new automaker comes out of bankruptcy protection. But he said, "There's no such guarantee in life."

The GM executive told Michigan lawmakers the automaker plans to make a decision by the end of the month on whether it will build a new compact car in Michigan, Tennessee or Wisconsin.
