(AP) -- A Michigan soldier serving in Iraq has been sworn in as a lawyer through a video connection to Lansing.

Army Reserve Maj. Miles Gengler of Grand Blanc was sworn in Thursday morning by Michigan Supreme Court Chief Justice Marilyn Kelly. His family attended the Lansing ceremony, while Gengler was in Baghdad's Green Zone.

The 35-year-old says he's "in awe" that people helped make the ceremony possible.

Kelly says she's unaware of such an event happening before.

Gengler took the bar exam in February after graduating from Thomas M. Cooley Law School in Auburn Hills.

He almost missed the exam because of his deployment but was able to delay his departure to take the test.

A law school dean promised Gengler he'd be sworn in even if he was in Iraq.
