DETROIT (AP) -- Authorities say a 19-year-old man with a suspended license was driving the sedan in which he and four other young people died after it skirted a gate at a railroad crossing near Detroit and was struck by an Amtrak passenger train.

Canton Township police spokesman Sgt. Mark Gajeski says Dan Broughton of Woodhaven was driving during Thursday's crash in Canton Township, about 20 miles west of Detroit.

Records from the Michigan Department of State show Broughton had a number of traffic violations, including speeding and disobeying a stop sign.

Failure to show a driver's license April 1 in Woodhaven led a judge to give him a one-month license suspension June 17.

The suspension began Wednesday and was to run through Aug 7.
