Following the PGA Tour and Buick’s joint announcement that contracts have been canceled for future Buick Open tournaments, The Flint Area Convention and Visitors Bureau held a joint press conference with the Grand Blanc Chamber of Commerce Tuesday to re-group, and try to change the tide. The Bureau had a contract issued through 2010 for one more Buick Open.
Bureau President Jerry Preston said the Buick Open could be saved if people write letters to the PGA Tour and to General Motors expressing their solidarity with the 51-year Genesee County tradition. He’s also calling for a web driven campaign on Facebook and other social networking sites.
Preston said Garber Buick in Saginaw was saved from shutdown thanks to more than 1,000 letters written to Obama Administration officials as well as GM. Garber had been listed among nearly 1,100 GM dealerships to have contracts dropped as part of the Administration’s restructuring process.
Preston told NBC25 he knows it’s a long shot, but remains optimistic. There is no time table for action, however Preston said the sooner the better.
