BIG RAPIDS, Mich. (AP) - Ferris State University has turned abandoned and often broken bicycles left behind on campus into free wheels for needy children.
The Big Rapids school used to auction off abandoned bikes.
But more recently, it decided to do help disadvantaged children instead.
This year, the Department of Public Safety collected the bicycles, fixed them where possible and turned about 60 of them over to area children's aid groups.
The recipients included the Muskegon River Valley Big Brothers Big Sisters, which got 24 bikes.
Foster care provider Mike Wicke of Evart says getting the bikes is like Christmas for the children he acres for.
