(AP) -- LANSING, Michigan - More public employee unions are coming out against a proposal to put their members under a statewide health care plan.
Teachers, state workers and firefighters held a news conference at the state Capitol Tuesday to urge lawmakers to focus on expanding - not limiting - access to health insurance.
Unions say bargaining at the local level shouldn't go away because local officials and employees know how to contain costs while ensuring quality coverage.
Democratic House Speaker Andy Dillon wants to consolidate thousands of separately bargained health plans for 400,000 public employees and retirees. He says hundreds of millions of dollars would be saved.
Michigan's largest teachers union has blasted the proposal. Now more unions are speaking against it.
