(AP) -- Beaumont Hospitals and Oakland University say they're recruiting 40 overweight children ages 8 to 12 to get free healthy living guidance while aiding research on the prevention of chronic disease.
Royal Oak-based Beaumont and Rochester-based Oakland University will give the volunteers and their families free entry into the medical center's established weekly, 12-session child weight management program. It uses psychologists, dietitians and exercise physiologists to help children lose weight.
Children and their families then will have six monthly follow-up sessions.
Researchers will study the children to measure the connection between weight and weight loss on type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure and early heart disease.
