FLINT (AP) -- A jury has awarded $131,000 in damages to a white Flint police officer who says race was a factor in promotions to a special unit in 2006.
The jury decided Thursday that race was a factor in promotions to the Citizens Service Bureau. Four of five officers chosen by former Mayor Don Williamson were black.
Williamson, who is white, has denied intentionally hiring black officers for the unit, which was disbanded in 2008.
Officer Keith Speer, head of the police union, was awarded the money. He is white.
Speer's lawyer Glen Lenhoff says an additional 47 cases are pending in federal court.
City attorney Angela Watkins tells The Flint Journal the city hasn't decided whether to appeal the verdict but respects the jury's decision.
