(AP) -- LANSING, Mich. - Michigan's Secretary of State offices will stay open two extra hours on Aug. 24 and Sept. 8 to deal with increased customer demand following state furlough days.
The announcement Tuesday from Secretary of State Terri Lynn Land means offices will be open until 7 p.m. on those days.
Secretary of State offices typically handle about 60,000 transactions a day. But volume has ballooned to 75,000 transactions on the business days following a furlough day.
Expanding office hours could shorten the wait for customers.
Michigan already has had four unpaid furlough days for state workers to cut government costs.
The last two furlough days are scheduled for Aug. 21 and Sept. 4. Secretary of State and most other state offices are closed on those days.
