(AP) -- Bill Cosby is joining a campaign to turn around the ailing Detroit Public Schools. The district says in a release that the actor, activist and creator of The Cosby Show telephoned Robert Bobb after learning of the emergency financial manager's efforts to wipe out fraud and waste and to improve education in the school system.
Cosby will support the $500,000 "I'm In" student retention campaign launched this month. Enrollment dropped below 100,000 last year. Bobb has budgeted for 83,777 students this fall. Cosby will go door-to-door with Bobb on Tuesday afternoon, speaking to parents about keeping their children in the district or returning them to Detroit Public Schools.
A rally will follow at Henry Ford High School. Bobb says the district faces a $259 million deficit.
