(AP) -- Oakland University professors have voted to authorize their union representatives to call a strike on the first scheduled day of classes. Wednesday's vote by the Oakland University chapter of the American Association of University Professors followed months of negotiations that have failed to produce a contract agreement.

The Detroit News says talks were expected to continue into early Thursday, but it wasn't known whether classes would start on time for the suburban Detroit school's approximately 18,000 students. University spokesman Ted Montgomery told the Detroit Free Press that bargainers planned to "work hard until something is done."

But a message posted on the school's Web site said a strike is against state law. It said students were free to leave if instructors didn't show up for class within 15 minutes.
