(AP) -- Michigan education officials are scheduled to provide an update Thursday on how schools are progressing toward meeting academic performance goals. The annual progress reports are required by the federal No Child Left Behind law.
The Michigan Department of Education is expected to publicly release report cards for the state's public elementary and middle schools.
About 93 percent of elementary schools and 89 percent of middle schools made adequate yearly progress in the 2007-08 report year. Fewer than 50 percent of the state's high schools made adequate progress.
Schools that don't make adequate progress for two straight years wind up on a sanctions list. The sanctions get tougher every year.
