(AP) -- A shortage of nurses from racial and ethnic minority groups is behind a Saginaw Valley State University outreach program to the Saginaw Public Schools. The university says it landed an $855,000 U.S. Department of Health and Human Services grant for the three-year program that starts this fall.
Saginaw valley says it will support 30 of its students and 15 students from Saginaw high schools. Current nursing students will mentor pre-nursing university students, and they will work with high school students interested in nursing.
The university says it chose to work with the Saginaw district because of its 65 percent minority enrollment.
