A little girl is in critical condition after a stray bullet hit her in the head.
It happened as she and several other children played on a front porch in the 1400 block of Gage Street in Saginaw. Police say the little girl is an innocent bystander, and was simply trying to enjoy her last weekend of summer before entering the sixth grade.
Rescue crews rushed her to a local hospital, where a doctor ordered the child life-flighted to Hurley Medical Center. Police say she is in critical condition.
“That child didn’t deserve that,” says Illinois resident Brenda Jackson. “She didn’t ask for that.”
Jackson heard the gunshots as she visited family here in Saginaw. She says the violence is a shock, and she hopes someone turns in the shooter. Police told NBC 25 they were looking for anyone who could describe him or her.
“It could have hit us. It could have hit anyone,” says Jackson. ”It was five shots right in a row.”
“I don't think it was intentional,” says Saginaw Police Det. Sgt. Joseph Dutoi. “I don't know why someone was shooting a rifle in the area. That's what were going to get to the bottom of."
