(AP) -- Michigan State Police will ride with students on school buses in the Mattawan area this week as part of a crackdown on motorists who disregard bus stop safety laws. Officers will ride along on the buses Tuesday through Friday and radio to partners when they see a driver violate laws put in place to protect children from oncoming traffic as they board and exit school buses.
Sgt. James Campbell says 18 officers will work three-hour blocks of time riding along on heavily trafficked roads like M-43 and Red Arrow Highway. Mattawan is about 10 miles southwest of Kalamazoo. Campbell tells the Kalamazoo Gazette that a similar program worked well in Hastings, so the Paw Paw post decided to try it after hearing complaints from parents.
